“ Eye Poppy” March 2020, 14” x 17”. Unframed mixed media collage
This collage is a study about loss and disconnection, the impetus for this collage is a direct link to Covid and being disconnected from the world. Also, the extreme disconnection of my muse and not having new photo images resulted in this piece made in mixed media. The feelings of loss and disconnection are reflected in the missing limbs, the poppy flower which I am a lover of...always fascinated me...represents the heart longing for some thing, the face is obscured because of the disconnection, the stripes of paint in the background might represent a jail cell...when I create, the process is very subconscious, it’s after the fact when I look at the finished piece that I makes sense of what I’ve put together. I dig deep within my subconscious to figure out it’s perceivable meaning, and a title. Here the title is a play on a Latino phrase, “Aye, Papi.” Which can be used when playfully hurt by someone, or in a sexual way, I thought the actual poppy and the lack of eyes in this collage was a funny juxtaposition with the title.
